We Have Been Busy!

Call it an obsession, call it insanity, call it whatever you like - we're pretty into this Scrabble thing. :)

We've created some additional features for the other Scrabble nuts out there - Lists of Bingo words, words ending in 'ING', and a Crossword Solver. We've also added a Scrabble Store with a few choice scrabble goodies such as scrabble tile cuff links as well as the usual Scrabble things such as dictionaries, board games, and electronic widgets.

J words!

The J words are some of the hardest to use - J is one of the least frequently used words in the English language (along with Q). It's 56 times less frequent in words used in the English language than E (The most commonly used words). There are two great two-letter J words in JO and JA (depending on whether you're using British or American English).

Scrabble X Words

The X tile is actually one of the easier high-point tiles to use in scrabble. The words "OX", "AX", "EX", and the two letter gem "XI" mean that placement is relatively easy. The key is to overlap one of these words on a triple-point tile or similar. Check out this list of Scrabble X words at scrabblefinder.com.

Scrabble Q Words

The letter Q (worth ten points in Scrabble) is another of the more difficult letters to use. A basic tip is to use the letter Q as soon as possible, particularly if you have 'U' tile. Without a U, there is this handy list of Q words without U - The most useful of all being the two letter word QI. Two other simple Q words without the letter U are "QAT" and "QIS". See Scrabble Word Finder for a complete list of Q words.

Scrabble Z Words

Some of the most useful Two letter scrabble words are 'ZA' and 'ZO' - available in the international SOWPODS scrabble dictionary. 'ZA' is available in TWL (US dictionary also).

Try scrabble finder's words with Z for a great list of scrabble Z words with 5, 4, 3 and two letters.

The Letter J

J is one of the more irritating of the scrabble letters to use, and if you're unlucky you can get stuck with one in your rack towards the end of the game - not good. At Scrabble Finder, we've put together a list of all the words with J in them in the TWL (North American) dictionary.

Most useful are 'JA' and 'JO', (The only two letter j words) which allow you to get rid of your tiles quickly and allow easy extension (e.g. with 'Y' to make 'JAY' or 'JOY').

Word Lists

To really get the most out of scrabble, you need to learn how to use the high-scoring letters such as X, Z, J, and Q. The reason they win you so many points is simply because they're usually harder to use in a game.

Scrabble finder has compiled a series of word lists to help you become unstuck when faced with one of these letters:

An Apology

We recently added a little popup window to Scrabble Words Finder which invited people to subscribe to our mailing list of Scrabble tips and tricks. It's set up so that it pops up once, and if you decide you're not interested it goes away, never to return.

Unfortunately, for anyone using Chrome, it kept coming back again and again and again... urk. Sorry, we messed up. It's been removed until we solve the problem. Also, our facebook word finder app had some teething problems and hopefully by the time you read this it'll all be back to normal. It never rains, but it pours.

Scrabble Finder on Facebook!

I've just put the finishing touches on the Word Helper facebook app, which uses the official SOWPODS dictionary in the same way that Scrabble Word Finder does. It's just a more convenient location for the same type of service. I play a lot of Wordscraper, and flicking to another site is sort of annoying.

I created a firefox bookmarklet for scrabble word finder which was my first attempt to fix the problem, but it doesn't seem to have too much adoption - I think even the concept of a bookmarklet is too techie for most. Having an app on facebook seems to fit in with how people use the site better.
